Create a Collage Chicken with Magazines
Oct 22, 2022Do you actually use those free recipe magazines from Coles? I have a pile ready and waiting for a moment to dive into a yummy reciepe, but lately I’ve found another use for them. Collage! Collage is an easy, inexpensive (especially if you use the free magazines from Coles) and fun art making activity that children from all ages enjoy. Making a collage helps your Little Artist build fine motor skills. It’s also a fun way to encourage your child’s awareness of colour and texture. Younger kids might enjoy ripping larger pieces and gluing only a few down, while more experienced artists can rip small pieces and include colour variation to create tone or form in their artwork.
I had such a fun time ripping and pasting my magazine pages to create this Classy Collaged Chook! Using only the primary colours (red, yellow and blue) and the white/black text pages meant this project was finished quite quickly. It’s also an easy activity to pop into a plastic slip and return to later. Click the button to download my Classy Chicken template to get this activity off to a start! Then all you need is a glue stick and some magazines.
The full length art video of Classy Collage Farm Animals is on it’s way to my Art Club for Kids. In this lesson I guide Little Artists through the drawing steps for a Classy Chook and Cheeky Cow, colour selection from their magazine and collage techniques to create their finished masterpiece. Join hundreds of other families as I your Little Artist’s creativity and art skills to the next level inside my Online Art Club for kids.

The Steps
-
Either draw the outline of your Classy Chook or use my printed template.
-
Find pages in your magazine for red, blue, yellow and black/white text pages. Then rip piles of each colour. You don’t need to make the pieces too tiny!
-
Select a colour section of your Chook to begin with, I started with the black/white text for the Chook’s body. Go ahead and glue the correct colours in the correct sections.
-
Be creative with a background! Add more collage pieces for confetti, paint with watercolours, and a night sky, it’s up to you. I would love to see your Classy Collage Chooks - tag @art_with_georgie on instagram
