How to draw a Frida Kahlo Portrait

painting watercolour Oct 22, 2022

With International Women’s day around the corner I’ve been head-over-heels googling some of my favourite female artists. FRIDA KAHLO has a long time been top of my list! I love her crazy, eccentric, tropical self portraits and flower crowns. Drawing portraits can be a tricky task for Little Artists, but this Frida inspired flower crown and monkey makes the process a bit more fun and less intimidating. You can also apply the steps in this project to paint a picture of ‘Mum’ (Mother’s Day art!) or someone special. To help get you started I created a step-by-step guide to drawing Frida. You can download it here.

LET’S DRAW FRIDA!

Art Supplies:

DRAWING THE FACE

Draw a ‘U’ shape for Frida’s face starting half way up the page. Little Artists can draw this shape with their finger first to practice the outline. Add two vertical lines for the neck, sweeping out to the side for shoulders. Then add two almond shaped eyes, a line for eye lids and thick black eye brows (the thicker the better - these are iconic for Frida!).

Next add a nose and mouth. I often draw a mouth so that the top lip looks like a wide ‘M’. The hardest part of the drawing is done!

ADDING THE FLOWER CROWN

Leave some space between the top of the face to draw the start of a monkey. Draw a circle for the face and two little ears and wobbly arms - these can go in any direction. Draw a curved lined for the monkey’s back - the rest of the monkey will be behind some flowers, we will draw his tail a little later.

Fill the first row of flowers above the face with about 4 BIG blooms. I share some flower examples on the board with my students, they love selecting different combinations to place on their Frida. It’s great for the first row of flowers to be BIG and fill in the top of her forehead.

Throughout the drawing part of this lesson our class stops and completes a ‘gallery walk’ - which is just a fancy word for walking around the room at everyone’s progress. This is a great way for students to find other flower ideas and arrangements they might like to add to their flower crown.

MORE FLOWERS

Continue adding a second row of flowers, making sure they over lap. Here students can experiment with a variety of sized blooms or continue with repeating larger flowers they have already drawn. Don’t forget to draw some simple ears and dress up Frida with earrings and a necklace. Finally, we add sprigs of leaves or berries as if they are ‘falling out’ of the flower crown.

PAINTING

Begin the watercolour painting process with painting the skin tone and monkey. We used Monte Marte 38’s Watercolour Palette which already had some great skin tones and brown colours. Then move onto the first four big flowers. My Frida is wearing a RAINBOW flower crown, but some students opted for cool or warm colour schemes.

Work your way towards the top of the page painting one flower at a time.

FINAL PAINTED OUTLINES

Watercolour paints dry very quickly. By the time you finish painting the first layer of flower colours you should be able to paint some fine details on top. My Little Artists chose darker colours to outline flowers straight over the top the sharpie marker lines and also add some extra painted brush strokes on the petals and leaves.

Your Frida portrait is done!
