Rainbows in Baby Art Class
Oct 22, 2022This baby art rainbow was left to dry, then cut out and glued to a
blue bubble wrap print back drop.
Who doesn't love a rainbow! They're the universal sign for all things AMAZING, WONDERFUL, COLOURFUL and childlike. They're found on baby themed everything in every colour you can imagine - so naturally, they're a perfect and easy shape to attempt with Baby.
They have featured often in our baby art class with stunning results! They're a simple shape to paint encouraging little hands to "flow" in one swift arch stroke across the page. With baby's hand loaded with paint we start at the bottom corner of the page, move towards the top centre and head back towards the opposite bottom corner.
Baby Art rainbows also looked gorgeous with any colour palette. The bright colours! The contrasting colours! The pastel colours! The harmonious colours! The trickiest part of the process for is deciding which colour scheme to go with. Can't decide? Most of our Mummie's ask their baby's first ... when they come up blank we coordinate the colours with the nursery or the kitchen or the room at home with this masterpiece will end up.
Valentine's Day themed rainbow
What you need
-
Paint Palette
-
Something upright to blu-tac the paper to. An easel or window.
-
Paper. A3 size is great!
-
Baby smock
-
Don't forget your little Baby Artist too.
-
Baby wipes
-
Blu tack
For this version you can create a bubble wrap print on a separate piece of paper. Paint onto blue wrap, lay it on top of your paper and press down. Once your rainbow is dry, cut it out and glue on top.
What to do
If you don't have an art easel, don't worry! I often blue tack the paper to a comfortable height on the window (or wall) and pull a chair and table a little closer.
Position baby - this bit get's a bit of experimenting! I place baby on my lap. Take your left arm across their front, tucking their left arm down (we don't want this to fling about and get messy!). Hold baby's right hand with your left hand, this is the hand that will guide their palm onto the page. Use your right hand to hold the paint brush to place paint onto baby's hand.
Take a seat and load the brush with paint and let baby's hand squish it between their fingers. Linger here for a moment - it's a sensory game for baby right now! Give your brush a twirl so the paint doesn't drip.
Once baby's little hand is loaded with paint, stand up and guide their palms to the bottom corner of the paper. Have a bounce, and sign a song, whilst guiding their palm toward the top of the page. You might need to re-load your paintbrush and baby hand again.

When one colour is done, cover baby's hand in a wipe and clean off the excess. It doesn't need to be complete clean. Then repeat with the next colour until your done.
TIP: We don't switch or clean brushes for every colour. We use the same brush for warm colours (red, yellow, pink etc) and a different brush from cool colours (blue, purple, green etc).
