Van Gogh Sunflowers
Oct 22, 2022The students revealed to me that this painting project was largely self directed with a few key guidelines from their teacher and a great online tutorial to follow (below). They first watched the tutorial together as group, then started again at the beginning and individually paced themselves throughout the project over the course of about 4-6 lessons. The creativity was in full flow and they went deep into exploring acrylic paint. This project could also be completed in one or two sittings of a shorter time frame and have great success with younger year levels.
As a teaching staff we were so inspired by this class we got together for a painting session one night after school!
Some take away tips from the students:
-
Colour mix all your paint first
-
Sketch an outline of the basic sunflower, horizon line and vase first
-
Keep paint dry between sessions with glad wrap
-
Double load the brush
-
Layer the paint strokes by not pressing too hard on the canvas
-
Tape the boarder of your canvas first
-
Be messy and free!
